SubWoofer

Plan: Build a good Subwoofer. Enclosures will be made out of 3/4" MDF covered in 1/4 Oak Single Ply (Couldn't find any veneer locally). Legs and Top are Solid Oak.

Inspiration for this project came from a thread on the HomeTheater Talk forums. I would like to thank Pete Mazz for the original design and talking with me to give me his hints and tricks. I would also like to thank Parts Express and Apex Jr. for providing excellent products and service for the DIY audio enthusiast.

If you would like to talk to me about this project, I can me contacted via e-mail @ wyrdone@wyrdone.org or AIM as WyrdOne42 .

Parts:     (Total Cost: I spent approx $375 for all the parts and materials for the enclosure.)

11-13-2003 Plans/Design used. (Just got around to scanning and cleaning up image.)

The top is made up of two 24" long 1x12 boards (which are really 3/4"x11.25" (stupid Board sizing conventions)) and one 24" 1x3 (which is really 3/4"x2.5"). 1x12's are ripped down to 10.25" wide and joined with the 1x3 in the middle using "Resorcinol" glue. Top is 24"x24" square. Then I router the edge using a 1/2" chamfer bit to give it that distinctive "Mission" style.

Internal Dimensions are: 17"x17"x18" which give me an internal volume of: 3.01 Cu. Ft. There is no internal bracing since the sandwiched 3/4" MDF makes this unit VERY strong. This thing is built like a tank and finished weighs close to 120lbs. However, even when the sub is working full out you can lay your hand on top and not feel much vibration at all.

Here is the top curing (this is right before I unclamped the top, sanded and routed the edges).

After second coat of Polyurethane.

Pic of cutout for Amp and Woofer. (Cutting out the holes using a Jigsaw that only has a 1" stroke and a 2.5" blade is fun.....slow going...but it is doable.

Top after staining and it's getting 1st coat of Poly. (the artifact in the center top is a speck of dust in the camera lense.)

Just had to post a pic of my new baby that helped all this happen. ;-)

11-16-2003 Finished and Moved

We watched some movies Satyrday night. LoTR: Fellowship of the Ring (Extended Edition). The Sauron and Balrog scenes really do give the sub a workout and the sub shook the whole house. Still need to tweak the crossover and delay settings.

There used to be an end-table here. The Sub is a bit taller but my wife doesn't mind. This is toward the read of the room which is an open floorplan with cathedral ceilings.

Better view of placement. See it matches the current bookshelves which are also red oak. The puzzle on the wall used to be straight. ;-)
