SubWoofer #2
![]()
Plan: Build a new computer Subwoofer. Enclosures will be made out of 3/4" Birch Cabinet Ply. Edges are Solid Oak with 5/8" roundover.
I wanted a subwoofer for my computer room that would give me more "kick" while playing games yet would also be good for music while programming. I wanted something under 2 cubic feet in size. I ended up going to the Dayton 8" Shielded DVC subwoofer downfiring and ported in a 1.47 cubic foot enclosure.
If you would like to talk to me about this project, I can me contacted via e-mail @ wyrdone@wyrdone.org or AIM as WyrdOne42 .
Parts: (Total Cost: I spent approx $140 for all the parts and materials for the enclosure.)
Dayton Loudspeaker 8" Shielded DVC driver (Parts Express Item #:295-480).
Dayton 100W Plate Amplifier (Parts Express Part Number: 300-802).
2 of 2'x4' sheets 3/4" Birch Plywood
6' of 1x3 Solid Oak (for edging)

Box Internal Dimensions: 13x13x15
Down firing
Ported (2"x6.1")
Solid wood & Cabinet grade Plywood construction.
Cutting plan:
4 pieces of 13"x15.75"
Ply 2 pieces of
13"x13" Ply
4 pieces of 3/4"x3/4"x14.5" Oak Trim (mitered at corners)
4 pieces
of 3/4"x3/4"x 15.75" Oak Trim.
Assembly:
Assemble Top of Enclosure by attaching the 4 pieces of 3/4"x14.5" trim to the edges of one of the 13"x13" boards. I used biscuits.
Assemble front and back by attaching a 3/4"x15.75" piece of oak trim on each edge of a 13x15.75 board. On the Front install the 2"x6.10" port (PVC tubing works great).
Then assemble the box by joining the sides to the front and back and the bottom. Getting all the edges joined correctly with biscuits was challenging but fun.
Then attach the top to the enclosure.
Round over the edges and cut the Amp and Driver cutouts.
Apply stain (I used Minwax Honey Maple Gel stain.) Then three to 4 coats of Polyurethane (I used the Minwax High Gloss type. Sanding and buffing with ##00 steel wool between coats).
Attach legs. (as this is a down firing type) I bought 4 "Handrail Bracket, Brushed Nickel" which were $2.45 each and make good solid 3" metal legs.

After Three coats of Gloss
Minwax Polyurethane. The red oak trim didn't end up being as dark as I wanted
it. Next time I think I'll tape off the center panels and use a darker (nice red
cherry) gel stain.
Back of Box showing Amp
Cutout. It is centered a bit farther up the box as I wanted to make sure it
would clear the driver.
Woofer Cutout. 7 1/8" Hole
for an 8" Driver. Surface Mount.
These are what I'm using for
feet. they give 3 1/4" height off the floor. Cost me $2.45 each. Brushed Nickle.
Should also act somewhat like speaker spikes.
The Driver. Wired for
parallel voice coils giving me a 4 Ohm impedance. 80W RMS/ 120W Peak.
PE 100W Amplifier. 100W @ 4
ohms.
